Flags of Australia, Turkey & New Zealand

Lest We Forget

Lest We Forget

Anzac day is celebrated on 25th April each year by Turkey, Australia and New Zealand as remembrance of an 8 month battle in which over 8000 Australian & NZ soldiers died and Turkey lost 84000 brave defenders in a battle for the beach at Gallipoli, which Turkey refers to as "The Field of Blood"
*
Old enemies now join together with a strong bond of friendship to recognise the sacrifice made by both sides in the World War 1 tragedy which ultimately led to the emergence of Turkey as a modern state governed by its visionary wartime leader, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and the coming of age of the Britsh colonies of Australia & New Zealand.

Australians to celebrate their own thanksgiving day

Australia will celebrate thanksgiving day on May 14th, 2005 following the success of last years celebration, which was launched by His Excellency, the Governor-General of Australia, Major Michael Jeffery, on 11 February 2004 at Government House, Canberra. His Excellency explained that Australia Day, held on January 26th each year, and the National Day of Thanksgiving, are different and celebrate different things.
*
Thanksgiving Day is to celebrate the communities faith while Australia Day represents the formation of The Commonwealth of Australia by the co-operation between the states and the inauguration of Federal Parliament.
*
Australia, like the USA, is a federation where the states have the main power and the federal government exercises power on their behalf.
*
The National Day of Thanksgiving is an opportunity to give thanks for the democratic freedoms and lifestyle Australians share with each other and to pray for those in less fortunate circumstances.

Pope John Paul II

Roman Catholics and non Roman Catholics shall give thanks for the life and contribution to world events by this man who has left behind him a legacy of freedom from oppression of millions of people, particularly in his home country of Poland and other regions of Europe.
